Anna Cooke may have existed in real life, but is essentially only known through the novel The Sot-Weed Factor by John Barth, based very loosely on the few bare facts known about the life of her brother, the poet Ebenezer Cooke.

In Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life, Philip José Farmer draws on Barth's history of the Cooke family. Ebenezer and Anna's father was named Andrew Cooke, as was their grandfather, as was Anna's son by one Henry Burlingame, whom the family had employed in the capacity of tutor. Farmer identifies Andrew Cooke III as the ancestor of Kilgore Trout.
