Dr. Christopher Syn was an 18th century pirate (known as Captain Clegg), Vicar of Dymchurch, and a leader of smugglers in Kent known as The Scarecrow. His exploits were chronicled by Russell Thorndyke.

Dr. Syn is the ancestor of a later Dr. Syn, named Reginald, who married Philea Jane Fogg-Fog (named for her uncle Phileas Fogg), per Philip José Farmer's novel The Lavalite World.
