Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a British doctor, writer of fiction, historian, essayist, politician, activist, gentleman-amateur sportsman, and champion of Spiritualism, best known for having chronicled the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. He was knighted, ostensibly for his activities during the Boer War and for his writings in defence of the British policy there, but more probably for the Holmes books. It should be noted that Conan Doyle's sister Constance married E.W. Hornung.
The Sherlock Holmes stories, and to a lesser extent his stories about Professor Challenger, Brigadier Gerard, Micah Clarke and Nigel Loring, are central to Philip José Farmer's Wold Newton Universe. Later researchers have found links to some of his other stories.
By tradition, Sherlockian scholars consider that Conan Doyle was not the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories, but merely the editor and literary agent of Dr. John Watson.
