Captain Rhett K. Butler is a major figure in the novel Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. Butler's presence in the Wold Newton Universe may have been implied by Philip José Farmer in Tarzan Alive, when he makes reference to Oread Butler's distinguished relatives. That the two Butlers are cousins is revealed in Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life.
Seminal Wold Newton scholars Todd Rutt and Arn McConnell reveal in their article The Mysterious Case of the Carters that Rhett Butler was the brother-in-law of John Carter, who had married Rhett's sister Margaret.
